Tarja Heikkilä has found the core of her artistic expression in birch twigs – a material that is at once modest, renewable, and astonishingly expressive. In her hands, ordinary twigs acquire new meaning: they are transformed into valuable raw material and continue their lives as unique works of art and functional objects.
For Tarja, twigs are not only a channel for creativity but also a calling to share her expertise. Over the years, she has published several books on the subject, held numerous exhibitions, and taught courses to new practitioners.
Previously, Risupiha, which operated in connection with Tarja’s home, participated in Konstrundan, but this year she invites visitors to Pernaja to explore her fascinating exhibition “Luutarhasta Lustitarhaan.”
The exhibition at Galleri Kung, titled “Luutarhasta Lustitarhaan” functions as both a structural and atmospheric concept for the space. It describes a transition from death and darkness to joy and light.
The works are primarily created from birch twigs and draw their inspiration from the writings of Mikael Agricola.
Tarja Heikkilä presents the exhibition on site, sharing insights into the works and demonstrating how birch twigs are processed.
